The Great Tortoise and his Dancing Organs

We cannot display this gallery

Anagnorisis video artist, Andreco, who showed his work with us back this past summer, recently exhibited his performance installation, The Great Tortoise and his Dancing Organs, in the Piazza Maggiore – the Bologna city center in Italy.  Commissioned by “LA Pillola” Bologna, the 100 square meter turtle, made with recycled PVC and paint, was enhanced by dancers performing as a heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, stomach and intestine, who start a perpetual ritual dance around the big animal after leaving his body.  Andreco’s work as an environmental engineer and his interest in the occult simultaneously influence his work.

About the work and the artist:

The production of non-biodegradable waste, emission of pollutants into the atmosphere and the waste of resources produce a serious damage to the ecosystem, affecting living organisms, animals and plants. How often reminded, many of these consequences are due to the lifestyle of western man and to an anthropocentric view of life on earth. The extinction rate of animal and plant species in recent centuries is extremely high.   Even today there are species in risk of extinction, including some species of whale and sea turtles.  For this reason was chosen the sea turtle as a symbol for this performance.  The sea turtle is represented with its internal organs stylized to highlight the significance of existence and being. Organs are in fact affected by the effects of substances pollutant through not controlled food or through the atmosphere. …

The presence of the internal organs is a constant in the artistic work of Andreco, since the beginning of his artistic production. The artist reveals what the human eye can’t see and goes beyond the superficiality of things of beauty and appearance, to give value to their content and their symbolic and intrinsic message.  The artist carries out a research on primitive art and tribal rituals, to process its own point of view on human been and create a personal universe of symbols.
